Texas state trooper secretly pays for 92-year-old woman’s tires

RICHMOND, Texas — A Texas state trooper helped pump up the spirits of a 92-year-old woman who was having a tough time paying for new tires.

Trooper Drew Stoner came to the rescue of Mary Summers, who was at a tire shop in Richmond on Thursday after getting a nail in one of her tires, KHOU reported.

Omar Oregueda, a mechanic at Integrity Tire, told Summers all four of her tires were bad.

“The tire on her vehicle wasn’t repairable and the other tires were shot,” Oregueda told KHOU. “They were already completely destroyed.”

Repairs were going to cost more than $600, and Summers did not have that kind of cash.

“I said, ‘Well, I can’t do all the tires. I can just do the one,’" Summers told KHOU. “'Just tell me much the one is going to be.'”

Stoner was sitting behind Summers, waiting to have his oil changed. When he got to the counter, he said something to the cashier before leaving.

Moments later, Oregueda told Summers that all of the tires would be replaced and were paid for.

“He said, 'They’re paid for and everything.’ And I said, ‘Who paid for it?’" Summers told KHOU. "And he said, ‘The trooper that was in here.’ And I can hardly talk about it now because I want to cry because he did that. And he did it, and he left.”

Stoner said he could not imagine Summers leaving with bad tires.

“I’m thinking, ‘What if she goes out on the road and a tire goes out on her (or) kind of falls apart on her, and she’s on the side of the road?’” Stoner told KHOU.

Summers wanted to say thanks, and the two got to meet.

“I’m just so thankful for you, and I’m so proud,” Summers said she told Stoner after they hugged and chatted. “I’m proud to meet someone that has a heart that big. I just love you to death.”

Stoner, by the way, also had kindness passed on to him. Oregueda gave the trooper his oil change for free.

“For a stranger to take care of another stranger like that ... let’s all just take care of each other,” Oregueda told KHOU. "That’s what it’s about.”
